1st CSA Box and Cabbage Stir Fry

I am SO excited about this weekly produce box.  I signed up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) box from Wild Things Farm just over the Oklahoma border.  Wild Things Farm is actually in Pocola, just about 10 minutes from Fort Smith.  I signed up that I was interested in the CSA program back in the fall, and I got an email weeks ago offering me to join.
I jumped on it!  For my first year, it’s $22/week.  I think returning members get a discount at $20/week.
We got our first box on Monday!
It came LOADED with veggies.  It came in a big reuseable box.  We bring the box back with us next week to trade out.
We had the option, in our email from the farm, to add some herbs to our box this week.  I asked for dill and garlic chives (there was also cilantro and marjoram available).
There were two BIG bags of beautiful, fresh purple asparagus, a bag of butter crunch lettuce, and a bag of kale (hello kale chips!)
There was also a bag full of carrots (gotta find out what to do with the carrot tops!), a bag of spinach, and some spring onions.
This was a GIANT head of napa cabbage.
The email from the farm also said they had mustard and collard greens available, but I wanted to hold off and see how much stuff we were getting before we got in too deep.  I want to be able to use all the produce we get.
So…I used some the produce to make a cabbage stir fry.
I used about 6 cups of chopped cabbage, one spring onion chopped, and 2 carrots shaved with the peeler.  I sauteed them in some oil and garlic.  I sprinkled it with ginger, pepper, and soy sauce.  I added in some brown rice and scrambled an egg.
I added about a tablespoon of store bought stir fry sauce and we devoured it!
It was fresh, light, healthy, and locally grown.  I know we are supposed to get at least 9 more CSA boxes this season.  I can’t wait to see what other yummy things are coming our way!

  1. Yum!!! This is awesome, and your stir fry looks amazing!!

  2. We have a CSA farm in our town, but it’s way expensive! Instead of doing a CSA we have been buying from them at the weekly farmers market and eating dinner there on Friday’s-they make 100% locally sourced pizza-so fun! Your stir fry looks so yummy!

  3. Oooh, your stir fry looks so yummy! And I love that they include fresh herbs in your box! Will they also start adding fresh fruits to your box this summer? I think it’s an awesome idea! We finally got a Farmer’s Market here in our tiny town, and I’m ready to start hitting it up to see what fresh stuff I can find!

  4. so fun! wish we had something like that here!

  5. That cabbage stir fry sounds amazing!!!!

  6. This makes me SO happy! This is REAL, unprocessed food. I LOVE IT!

  7. That looks amazing – I may need to check into that! Or I should just get up in the morning and hit the farmer’s market 😉
