Can I do Zumba on Carpet?

It’s time for another Zumba FAQ!  This time, a woman at the gym asked me “Can I do Zumba on carpet?”  There was a class at her church, but the room was carpeted.  She wanted to know about doing Zumba on carpet. So here’s the scoop.

Doing Zumba on Carpet

Whether you’re interested in taking a class at a carpeted facility or just doing the Zumba DVDs or video game in your living room – You CAN do Zumba on carpet, but you’ll want to do some prep first.
You’ll want to make sure you have the right shoes for Zumba.  These are shoes with little-to-no-tread…so a grippy running shoe may not be ideal.  I tell my students to get a dance or cheer shoe because they have hardly any tread.  Zumba actually makes shoes (check out my faves here– and use code BLEE1 to get 10% off!).
If your shoes are not ideal, you can use carpet gliders to make it easier. Zumba makes carpet gliders that slip over the toe of your shoe to enable you to make the sideways/lateral movements that can be difficult on carpet. Again, you can get 10% off your carpet glider order with the code BLEE1.
If you really don’t want to buy gliders, you can also wrap duct tape around your shoe like a carpet glider, however, the duct tape will be a little more “grippy” than the carpet glider.
If you’re doing Zumba on carpet, you’ll definitely want the right shoes and something to help you slide over the carpet.  Don’t attempt to do Zumba barefoot or in socks – it’s too high impact for that!  You’ll want the support of the shoe, but you’ll just need to make it easier to move in.
If you have any questions about doing Zumba on carpet, let me know! I’m happy to help!
