20 Things You Might Not Know About Me

20 Things You Might Not Know About Me

My new friend Sarah tagged me in the “20 Things You Might Not Know About Me” (sweet thing….because she said “one weekend at AWBU wasn’t enough time to get to know each other”  LOVE that!).  Since my life has been super boring and laid back as I recover from gallbladder surgery…I’m happy to play along.

The original blog tag started here at the Blacksburg Belle. I’m just answering her questions.

Question 1: How tall are you?

5’3”. Some days I feel normal height.  Some days I feel short.

Question 2: Do you have a hidden talent? If so, what?

I can fit my fist in my mouth.  It makes my face all red, and I get slobber everywhere (read: NOT cute) so I don’t do it often.

Question 3: What’s your biggest blog-related pet peeve?

That’s a good question. I would say people who anonymously comment.

Question 4: What’s your biggest non-blog related pet peeve?

When people leave an empty toilet paper roll.  Not cool.

Question 5: What’s your favorite song?

Look at You by Hanson.  It’s got a great beat, makes me want to dance, and I smile when I hear it.  I recently read that the music/movies you see and hear at age 10 have the biggest impact on your life.  Definitely true of Hanson.

Question 6: What’s your favorite Etsy shop that isn’t yours?

Secret Garden Notes – I’m loving her bullet jewelry. #redneckwoman

Question 7: What’s your favorite way to spend your free time when you’re alone?

Napping, if I’m honest.  I love to nap.

Question 8: What’s your favorite junk food?

Zaxby’s tater chips.  Yum.

Question 9: Do you have a pet or pets? If so, what kind and what are their names?

I have a shih tzu, Mikey.  He’s a handful, but we love him.

Question 10: What are your number one favorite nonfiction and fiction books?

Fiction: The Hunger Games

Nonfiction: Let’s Pretend this Never Happened by Jenny Lawson.  SO funny.

Question 11: What’s your favorite beauty product or tool?

Cover FX cream concealer.  This stuff would cover anything.

Question 12: When were you last embarrassed? What happened?

I embarass myself on a regular basis. ha! Probably most recently embarrassed when I had to buy stuff for a friend’s bachelorette party (read: I cleaned out the aisle at Walgreens) and the only checker was a male.  I searched the store for a woman stocking the shelves and begged her to open a register for me.  “I just can’t go to him,” I begged her.  She did.  Thank goodness.

Question 13: If you could only drink one beverage (besides water) for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Stella Rosa Black red wine.

Question 14: What’s your favorite movie?

The Wizard of Oz.

Question 15: What were you in high school: prom queen, nerd, cheerleader, jock, valedictorian, band geek, loner, artist, prep?

I was a cool choir kid.  I was with the artsty (read: weird) music kids, but cool enough to make homecoming court. ha!

Question 16: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Probably Northwest AR or Tulsa, OK.  I like where I live, but I would personally prefer a bit bigger area.  My husband, on the other hand, likes more rural.  So we’ll probably stay where we are.

Question 17: PC or Mac?

I’m a PC girl.  Can’t imagine dishing out the cash for Mac.

Question 18: Last romantic gesture from a crush, date, boy/girlfriend, spouse?

My husband bought me new dining room chairs when I was out of town on a work trip. It’s sort of sad that new furniture is romantic, huh?

Question 19: Favorite celebrity?

I want to be friends with Amy from Karmin.

Question 20: What blogger do you secretly want to be best friends with?

I wish I was real life friends with Rachel from Suburban Strut.  We would share closets. And she seems like she is so grounded and real.

Thanks to Sarah for tagging me.  She has some beautiful photography and heartfelt stories on her blog.  Check her out!

Friday Five: Visions for the Blog

Friday Five: Visions for the Blog

I love doing Friday Five. It helps contain my random thoughts into something that sort of makes sense, which is why I’m posting this topic (new blog direction/inspiration) on a Friday Five so I don’t ramble.

As a reader, I want you to know I have loved sharing my heart, my struggles, my life with you thus far.  That’s not changing.

However, in an effort to be the best version of me, that includes attempting to be a better blogger.  More focused, more consistent, better writer, better photographer.  Here’s what that might look like (based on inspiration from AWBU):

  1. More focused mission with my posts.  I have had some posts before that really share my heart. I’ve had many posts that were just a “here’s what we did” type post. I’ve had some where my personality shines through, and others that I slap together in 5 minutes.  I want a more focused mission with this blog. My mission is to share my life authentically – all while pointing toward my mission of being better every day. I want to remember that this blog is more than just my rambles, it’s a place of expression…and I want to express my journey.
  2. Be a better photographer. Beautiful images are captivating. I am going to attempt to take better pictures, both with my camera and my phone. This may include some light editing just to enhance a photo, but they won’t be edited to be fake. Nope. You’ll see the blemishes and bad hair days, just like before. Remember, I’m attempting to be authentic and real.
  3. Continue to find my voice. When I throw posts together quickly, I lose who I am in the writing. I’m trying to be myself, and write like myself more.
  4. Work to partner with more businesses that I’m interested in/passionate about.  This blog WILL NOT turn into a product review blog.  You trust me too much for me to always be advertising for you.  But, I understand that I have an audience, and I want to share products and places that I love…and I think you’ll love too.  I have some fun features of neat things I’ve found that I get to share with you in the coming weeks.
  5. Stay within some loose structure for posts.  I find more inspiration in a loose outline.  I sort of miss the days when I would have What I’m Loving Wednesdays, or other blog ideas like that.  I am going to be roughly doing these posts in a week:
    • Monday: Weekend Recap. Sharing our weekend adventures (or lack thereof!)
    • Tuesday: One Thing. Sharing one thing I’m aiming for/wishing for/working towards/doing differently this week.  I may do a linkup of this.
    • Wednesday: Free day to share anything.
    • Thursday: Things I’m Learning.  This could be something from Bible Study, something I’m reading, something I’ve searched online, something neat I’ve watched.  But in an effort to be better, I want to be learning.
    • Friday: Friday Five.  Five things about any topic I feel led to do.

This is not a strict structure, but more like guidelines to help me share my heart and my life. I actually find inspiration in writing around some rough ideas like these.  If something else is on my mind and heart, that’s cool too.

So there ya go.  Five things I’m working on here at Razorback Britt.

I’d love to hear your take on these things, or get some ideas on what you are focused on at your own blog.  Leave me a comment and let me know if you’d participate in a “One Thing Tuesday” linkup, too.  I’m wondering if anyone would play along.

A little more AWBU love

A little more AWBU love

Ok, I am still talking about AWBU.  Can’t stop.  Won’t stop.

There were so many good things crammed into a couple days, I’m still breaking it down.

AWBU hosted a handmade market where bloggers who made things could sell them.  It was so fun to shop.  I bought a CUTE wooden necklace from my friend Sarah.  These are now in her store! Check out her Etsy here.

The first night on our way to Rogers Little Theater, I met a fun friend.  Her name was Jen, and she blogs over at Coffee with Jen. We got to hang quite a bit over the weekend (conference meals, dinner Saturday, etc.) and she was just so fun. She blogs about her life, and my favorite stuff of her site are her day trips around the NWA area.  SO fun!

At Sunday’s group session, Alliance Rubber sponsored a “Shark Tank” contest.  Each group was given a BIG basket of rubber band products (who knew there were so many!? I’ll talk more about Alliance Rubber later!), and tasked to create a “product” and sell it to the panel of judges.

My group created a “line of vlogging tools” that we called the “Vlog Tog.”  We basically used the rubber bands to think of every way you could attach your phone to objects (your craft supplies, your head, etc)…and we won the contest!  We won $15 Container Store gift cards! Woop!

Here is team Vlog Tog.

One special part of the weekend was getting to catch up with this friend – Keisha from Big Pitt Stop.  We go way back.  Keisha worked at Ouachita when I was a student, but we ended up working together a lot and became friends.  She’s been an active part of AWBU for a while…so it was fun to join her there.  Check out her blog, and also her Etsy shop- K Cutie Designs (which has ADORABLE dresses for kids and adults in it!).

One more highlight was meeting a girl from my hometown.  We actually went to the same high school, but she was a few years younger than me…so we were never there at the same time.  It was quite funny, actually.  We were sitting by each other at the Alliance Rubber presentation. Alliance is headquartered in my hometown of Hot Springs.  The video starts playing, and she goes “Oh…that’s my hometown!” And I’m like “Shut up! Mine too!” And then we freaked out and talked through the first couple of minutes of the video figuring out our connections.  So this is Mollie from Hot Springs.

Ok, so enough details about AWBU I suppose.  Tomorrow I’ll give you a recipe I learned at Foodie Friday…and then Friday I’ll outline some improvements/changes coming to Razorback Britt for Friday Five.

Hope you have a great day!  Have you ever met blogging friends in real life? Tell me about it!

AWBU Conference Recap

AWBU Conference Recap

I’ve been blogging personally since 2009.  And in 2012, I began a career as a corporate blogger.  So many hours of my life have been spent looking at a flashing cursor trying to draft a blog post (both at home and at work). Over the years, I’ve learned a lot about blogging.  My work has sent me to conferences (and I’ve read a bazillion articles) covering the more technical side of blogging. However, I know there is much about this craft that I don’t know, especially when it comes to my more personal blog.  So I was looking forward to learning at Arkansas Women Bloggers University.

And learn I did.

Some of my favorite sessions at the AWBU conference were about Google Analytics, iphone-ography, and working with brands.  But my overall takeaways from the conference are these:

  • Find out who you are on your blog and be consistent.
  • Give some time to your branding and what your brand stands for.
  • Devote energy to making the details great.
  • Authenticity draws others in, so don’t be afraid to be yourself.

I know those 4 points seem basic, but most of the sessions revolved around those in one way or another.  I’m still finalizing what those 4 points mean for me and my blog (more on that later), but I do know that I got to hang with some pretty awesome people.

I FINALLY met in real life Brittany of Ramblings of a Little Wife.  We’ve been reading each other’s blogs for a while, and we regularly talk on Twitter…but hugging this girl’s neck was just wonderful.

At lunch (sponsored by Great Day Farms), Alli Worthington spoke to us about making our lives meaningful by cutting out the stuff that doesn’t matter.  A refreshing word for sure.

After the conference ended for the day, a group of us went out to eat.  Like a bad blogger, I forgot to take a picture of the group.

Later that evening, many of us gathered in the hospitality room (sponsored by Arkansas Grown) to visit, play games, and drink wine. Everything is better with wine. 🙂  And somehow we ended up playing the raunchiest most fun game ever- Cards Against Humanity.  Play at your own risk…but a glass of wine in, and we were rolling.

To call out a couple friends, I just really enjoyed getting to know these two friends.  Jenny Mac and Mari.  Both of them lead the Women Bloggers group in their states (Missisippi and Oklahoma, respectively), and are just. too. fun.  But not only were they fun, we just sort of clicked.  There was good conversation, honestly, and lots of authentic friendship happening.  It was good.

I am SO glad I finally got to attend AWBU.  I mean, sure, I learned things.  But the friendships, connections, and just plain goodness that came from this group of women (and a couple men!) were so refreshing. I just don’t know the last time I felt so embraced, understood, and connected to so quickly.  If you have the chance to attend next year, I would highly encourage it.
