Weekend Recap: Friday’s Fun

Weekend Recap: Friday’s Fun

I am splitting up the weekend recap into two parts since we had a GLORIOUS weekend.
For starters, after work I headed to the gym.  This picture is blurry, but I wanted to document it.  I did 5 miles on the bike and FINALLY managed to keep my average RPMs over 100!  Hello fast legs! 🙂
After the gym, I got ready and met the family downtown at Bravo.  We enjoyed a nice dinner together…and then Tyler headed home while me, mom, dad, and Gram went to the performing arts center.
After a slight debacle with Gram’s wheelchair (WHY is it so hard for places to be accessible?!)…we got settled into our seats just minutes before the show.
We were seeing the AMAZING Audra McDonald. You might know her as Naomi Bennet from Private Practice, but I know her as an amazing broadway singer.  She put on an intimate concert here in Fort Smith…and I HAD to go.
Y’all.  She was amazing.  The first note took my breath away.  She sang mostly obscure broadway songs, because she doesn’t like being mainstream….but more than that, the show was just wonderful.  She was funny, heartfelt, and so genuine.  Her encore was “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess….and I had been waiting ALL night for that!  I may have teared up a little during that and “Moonshine Lullaby” from Annie Get Your Gun.  SO great.
We left the show, came home, loaded up the car….and headed to Branson!  More on that tomorrow!

Weekend Recap: BFF, NKOTB, and OKC

Weekend Recap: BFF, NKOTB, and OKC

Oh what a glorious weekend this was!  Friday evening, my best friend Alden came to town….and our sweet friend Haley came over too!  I made dinner, and then we went into town for ice cream (it was a fundrasier for the volleyball team….so it was a sacrifice I was willing to make! ha!).
When we came home, we decided to shoot off some fireworks!  We have a HUGE stash from the after 4th clearance the past couple years….so Tyler put on a show for us…and we played with sparklers!
Then we attempted to watch Pitch Perfect from Redbox.  But when I got home with the DVD, I noticed it was NOT Pitch Perfect…it was Passion of the Christ!  Not exactly Girl’s Night material!  So we watched New Year’s Eve (I had it on Netflix) and crashed.
Saturday, we were up early and headed to Oklahoma City!  We met Brandy and her cousin Katie for a fun weekend.  Our first stop was lunch at Toby Keith’s I Love this Bar and Grill!  The food was GREAT and our waitress sold us on a souvenier mason jar full of margarita….but it was the BIGGEST mason jar I’ve ever seen!  Oops! 🙂
Then Alden and I had a little fun with the limes! 🙂
And wouldn’t you know we ran into Toby himself? 😉
And the benches in the waiting area were truck beds…so cute!
We shopped around Bricktown and took a little nap after checking into our hotel.  Then we headed back downtown for dinner (at Texadelphia) and then the concert!
Me, Alden, Katie, and Brandy
It was SO fun to share this was my best friends! Alden and I have been bests for a while…and Brandy has become my best friend here.  I’m so thankful we all got to go together!
The concert started with Boyz II Men…who sounded AMAZING!
Then next up (who Alden was most excited about) was 98 Degrees!  Hello Nick Lachey! 🙂
Then out came New Kids on the Block.  Let me tell you…it felt like a neon fashion show at a Soccer Mom convention…but it was so fun!  The guys put one one heck of a show.  They even had a stage that raised.  So neat!
It was pertty funny…we had seats in the “nosebleed” section high up.  But during the concert, Alden actually got a nosebleed! ha!  (Sinus related…not altitude!).  When we got back, I got some sad news on my phone (that my horse Starlight was given to a new family that day)…so I spent a few minutes being sad and crying.  But thankfully, the fun concert took my mind off it for a while.
Sunday, we visited the Oklahoma City Memorial of the bombing that happened in 1995.  It was a beautiful memorial.
They have an empty chair for each person that died…along with an orchard and big “survivor’s tree”.  It was very moving.
We finished our weekend with lunch at Smashburger (I may be feeling like a busted can of biscuits after all the good food this weekend!), and some shopping at the outlet mall.
We got home around 5, and Alden decided to spend last night at my house as well.  We watched Pitch Perfect (Finally!) and laughed until it was WAY past my bedtime!
Such a fun weekend with friends!  How was your weekend?  Who was your favorite “boy band?”  I was an NSYNC girl (because I don’t classify Hanson as a dancing-in-costumes boy band).

Ooh La La

Last weekend when we were downtown, I saw a poster outside the Rib Room for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.  Now, I only know a couple of her songs…but I knew I HAD to go.  Grace comes to Fort Smith pretty often (not sure why?) but every time after her concert I hear people go on and on about how amazing she was.
So I called up my musical partner in crime, Haley, and we got tickets.  The concert was last night, which made for a long day (work all day, Zumba, then concert)…but it was SO worth it!
The Rib Room is awesome.  It was my first time down there, and the place is just neat.  It’s all standing room, but its like a giant patio.  The second level and edges are covered with an awning, but the middle is open air – and the weather cooperated with no rain and a gentle breeze.  It was great.
I love this girl so much!
Grace Potter can be summed up in four words: legs, hair, cool, talented.  She rocked that romper like it was nobody’s business.  Legs for days on that one.  And her hair?  It was like a sixth member of the band.  She was just so cool and sexy….but the amazingness was her talent.  She played pretty much every instrument on stage and sang flawlessly.  So good.
I’m SO glad we went to the concert.  It made for a long night (in bed at midnight, up at 5!)….but totally worth it. Thankful my little town has such awesome things going on all the time.  I just love it here.

Weekend Recap: Dirty Dog and Concerts

I started my weekend off right after work at the lake.  I had my bag packed and literally drove straight to the lake.  I got some sun and reading time before Tyler got off work at 6.
When Ty showed up, he brought Mikey.  Mikey made friends with this bigger dog.  This is him in rare form because usually he is so Alpha Dog he doesn’t make friends.
I had a cooler packed with hot dogs and we grilled out.  Tyler requested cheese hot dogs, so he was happy that I made them for him!  I am the family grill master.
Mikey got into some BBQ ashes.  He was one dirty dog!  He immediately got a bath in the lake!
Saturday, we attended a funeral for Tyler’s dad’s dad.  He wasn’t close to his grandpa, but it was still sad.  His grandpa had struggled with stomach cancer and honestly, most everyone there was relieved that Howie wasn’t in pain anymore.  It was just sad for Tyler’s dad to lose his dad so close to Father’s Day.
Saturday after the funeral, I did some shopping around town.  Then I came home to tackle laundry and cleaning.  What a fun Saturday night, huh?  Well, I got a lot done and it was surprisingly pretty relaxing to just chill at home.  Tyler was out racing RC cars, so it was just me and Mikey.  And the pile of laundry.
Sunday, we went to church, got some lunch and came home to rest for a bit.  At 3, we headed to Fayetteville.  Tyler let me shop a bit at Old Navy (theirs is always so much better stocked than ours) and Forever 21.  I got some cute stuff!  Then we got our favorite fried sushi rolls at Kobe.
Fuji roll and Razorback roll.  The Fuji has tempura shrimp, cream cheese, crab and tuna on top…and the Firecracker is my favorite.  A fried sushi roll of spicy crab, jalepeno, tempura shrimp, and cream cheese that is all deep fried.  NOT healthy, but totally worth it!
After our yummy dinner, we headed to the AMP for a concert!  The weather was BEAUTIFUL for an outdoor concert.  We had lawn seats and sat with my coworker Becky and her husband.  So much fun!
Andy Grammar opened.  He even came out and serenaded us on the lawn.  He was really entertaining.
Colbie Caillet came on next.  We saw her right when she hit it big several years ago…and her stage presence has improved so much!  She was really fun to watch.  She sounds amazing live.
And the concert finished with Gavin DeGraw.  He was wonderful.  Sounded great! I am so glad we went to the concert!
We got home really late last night (midnight…when I’m normally asleep by 10:30)…and we crashed.  I get up at 5 a.m.  Well, Mikey got sick last night on our bed and the floor….so at 3:30 Tyler and I were up cleaning up doggy puke.  Gross.  So I’m feeling tired. But the weekend was worth it and I can nap after work.
Who is your favorite performer to see live?  I LOVE my Hanson boys, but Gavin DeGraw sure did put the groove on it last night!
