Thanksgiving Weekend Recap

Thanksgiving Weekend Recap

We had a great Thanksgiving weekend.  Lots of downtown (read: naps!), lots of good food, and family time.

When I got off work Wednesday, we did most of the side dish cooking at mom’s.  It went pretty quickly (we are pretty efficient in the kitchen!) and then we all ate dinner and watched Pitch Perfect 2 together.

On Thanksgiving, we got up, did the rest of the cooking at mom’s, and then I came home to finish the ham.  I always make Alton Brown’s City Ham and everyone LOVES it.

We had quite the spread.  It wasn’t the same without Gram standing over everything and picking bites as we finished the food…but we had a good time together.

I had some stick-on mustaches, so of course, we had some fun with those.  Gavin is getting so big!  His voice is getting lower and my little Finding Nemo watching buddy is becoming a big kid!

After the meal, we all gathered around to play Bingo.

We used pennies to mark the spots…which was funny because Dad kept thinking we were betting!

Tyler had to go in to work an overtime job as security at Walmart….but I managed to sneak a picture before he left. 🙂

I as SO excited that my Uncle Neil got to come.  We finally got a wheelchair van for him- so he was able to come visit for the holiday.

Caitlyn ended up staying with mom for the weekend, so we got to go have a little fun.  On Friday, we all went to Movie Lounge to see Maze Runner Scorch Trails.  I love having a cocktail during the movie! ha!

Tyler worked overtime at the mall Friday night, so me and the boys did some couch snuggling.

Saturday, we did some shopping and then met up with Tyler after work for bowling!  People have always said Caitlyn is my mini-me! I love it!

On Sunday we put up mom’s Christmas tree and watched a movie.  Ours is going up this week!

I hope you had a great weekend.  What’s your favorite Thanksgiving dish?  This year mine was the mac and cheese!

Thanksgiving Weekend

Thanksgiving Weekend

Not gonna lie…this was an odd holiday weekend.  With Tyler working now (and working third shift overnight), he was missing for a lot of the celebrations.  I did love my time with the family….and he and I still got lots of fun time together….but it felt different.

On Thanksgiving, we had all the family together at mom’s for a feast.  My grandpa used to carve the turkey…and after he died…we always struggled to carve it.  My grandma started dating this great guy, Carl, and he carves our turkey for us!  Little blessings!

Tyler had to eat Thanksgiving dinner late once he woke up.  Then we played some games before he had to go in to work.  We love Rummikub and had a fun time playing it.

On Friday, I got up around 8 or so (once Tyler got home) and then got ready and did some shopping.  I got some good deals and helped mom by doing some of her shopping too.

I also took the dogs for a walk, which wore them out.  ha!

Saturday, I helped mom put up her tree, did some cleaning, Tyler and I had a date night (holla!) and we did some shopping together.  He needed some winter gear that was solid black so he can wear it on duty.

Sunday the weather was GORGEOUS (like 70+ degrees on the last day of November!!) so I made sure to take the pups for a walk and let them play in the yard after.

Tyler played Ultimate with some friends and set up a hunting blind….so me and the boys did some cleaning/cooking/TV watching. It was a great weekend….even if nothing too adventurous happened.  I’m getting used to this new normal with Tyler working overnight and missing some important stuff.  It’s worth it because I know he’s doing what God has called him to do…and I wouldn’t want him anywhere else besides right in the will of God!  So I’m just having to get used to the changes.

How was your Thanksgiving?

Ways to Be Active on Thanksgiving

The Thanksgiving eating has already begun.  We are having a potluck at work with a spread.  A SPREAD.

I mean banana pudding, beer maple bacon, breakfast tacos, donuts, cheese ball, queso, cookies…..and I’m gonna snack on it all day.

And don’t even get me started on tomorrow.

The only way to combat the food is to be active. I try to stay active all day if I can.

Here are some of my methods….

  • Actually WALK the dogs.  Instead of just putting them outside for potty breaks….walk outside with them.  It may only be 5 minutes or so…but that’s 5 minutes more activity than you were going to get.
  • Play a video game.  I’m talking about Wii or XBox 360 or something like that.  Challenge the family to a battle and get moving!
  • If it’s nice out, we will play a game of touch football in the yard after the meal.  We don’t have teams, really, or even a strategy…but we run, chase, and throw the ball.  It’s great.
  • Black Friday Shopping.  The hustle and bustle and walking and waiting in line can actually be a workout!  One year, we were running around Wal-Mart getting deals…and it was CARDIO.  Hit up a sale and get your heart pumping.

How do you stay active on Thanksgiving?  I’d love some more suggestions!

Thanksgiving Part 3: Downtime

The Saturday and Sunday of Thanksgiving break were spent chilling.  My cousins came in from Hot Springs, so I spent a little time at Mom’s watching movies with them. Tyler headed to the woods to deer hunt (silly deer are coming out too late at night…he can’t shoot them!).  But we did a few fun things.
Saturday evening, we had a birthday party for my friend Lauren at Cece’s house.  It was a PJ party!  We ate and played dance video games.  Too fun!
Candyce breaking it down!
All the girls in our PJS.  Yes, I’m holding a dog statue.  Don’t ask.
Me and the party host.  Yes, I’m wearing a leopard onesie.  I actually had sandals on too because I didn’t want to ruin my jammies walking from the car inside.
Another fun highlight was teaching dad and Gram to play Connect 4.  Dad usually doesn’t like games because he didn’t grow up playing them and doesn’t “get” them.  But he and Gram are totally perfectly matched playing Connect 4. I bought it on sale on Black Friday at Target…and it was a great purchase!
I also got our house decorated for Christmas!  I love a garbed up tree covered in tinsel, beads and tons of random ornaments. LOVE it.
And now that we’ve recapped Thanksgiving weekend…we can get back to regular blogging. 🙂
