Zumba Fashion: Zumba 101

Zumba is not just a workout.  It really is a way of life!  One aspect of that is the Zumba clothing!  Zumba sells their own line of Zumbawear.  But beyond that, Zumba fashion is about three things: cargo pants, bright colors, and customized clothing! Zumba fashion is for both instructors and students!
One thing that Zumba is known for is their cargo pants.  It is a joke at instructor trainings that until you buy your first pair of cargo pants, you aren’t a real Zumba instructor!  We have “the look” that is typical with one pant leg up, and one pant leg down….as seen in the Zumba shop.

Now let’s take a look at the bright colors of Zumbawear!

This is a group of instructors at our Zumbathon last year (I’m on the left in the pink shirt and purple pants!).  Notice the purple pants, bright tops, hats, jackets, and more!  We also love to pile on the bracelets!
 Workout clothing comes in bright neon colors now.  You can get neon compression capris, bright pink sports bras, and neon green tank tops. Zumba is the perfect place to rock those bright colors!

Customizing your clothing by cutting it up is also popular in the Zumba fashion world.


At the most recent Zumbathon, I cut up my shirt…you can see it here.  I wore a bright, contrasting color underneath to accentuate the cuts.

Even if you don’t have Zumbawear, Zumba is a great place to express yourself with your clothing!  The bright colors only add to the fun atmosphere of Zumba!  So in your next Zumba class, break out the bright colors!


The Calories Zumba Burns: Zumba 101

We workout to burn calories.  While I love doing Zumba….it IS a workout.  So what about the calories Zumba burns?

I previously used a BodyBugg heart rate monitor/calorie management system while doing Zumba.  I would love to tell you about the calories Zumba burns!

*side note: every body is different.  A person weighing 200 pounds will naturally burn more calories than a person weighing 120.  Also, a 150 pound person with more muscle mass will burn more calories than a 150 pound person who has less muscle mass.  Thirdly, your effort in any exercise determines your calorie burn.  Half way doing the work out will result in a lower calorie burn.  Lastly, classes can greatly vary from instructor to instructor.  We do several “toning” songs in my classes with squats, ab workouts, and the like.  We also do interval training going from high intensity to low intensity.  My findings about Zumba calorie burns are not scientific in any way.  I’m just telling you what I know. 🙂 *

Zumba is a GREAT high intensity workout. As Zumba isntructors, we are taught how to maximize a participant’s workout by having an interval class.  We mix high intensity cardio songs with lower intensity “toning” songs.

In order to get the best calorie burn bang for your Zumba buck, you have to give class your all.  I am constantly telling my classes to keep their abs engaged (hold them tight.  Think of that “sucking it in when you want to look skinny” time.  You are holding your abs tight.  If you engage more muscles, you will burn more calories.  In Zumba, you also have to “finish” your moves to get the full effect.  This means making each extension full, doing each squat, lunge, or whatever to its fullest.  No halfway here!  I know moves sometimes feel awkward or they don’t come naturally, but if you push yourself to really do the moves, you will reap the rewards.

When I would wear my BodyBugg, I would average 300-500 calories burned when taking a Zumba class. At that time, I was a 180-190 pound female with a slightly higher than normal muscle mass.  The classes would be 45 minutes to one hour.

When I TEACH Zumba, I averaged 500-600 calories per class.  This is due to the fact that as the instructor, you are moving a bit more and trying to amp up the energy in the class, so you exert yourself more.

The Zumba calorie burn is pretty much on average for any cardio activity.  However, Zumba is MUCH more fun!  Zumba is a bit different from other generic cardio activities (running, step aerobics) in that it is a full body workout.  So while your calorie burn may not be all that different, the way you are moving your body is.  I know from testimony of myself and others in my class, that Zumba does more to “reshape” your body than other cardio activities.  Because you are constantly using your legs, hips, shoulders, abs….instead of just trodding along on the elliptical, you are likely (in my opinion) to see more changes in your body along with the high calorie burn.

What is Zumba like?

So you have seen the infomercials, seen crazy people around town wearing bright colored funky clothes, and maybe you heard the music blaring from the group exercise room at your gym.  And you are wondering…what is Zumba like?

Zumba, honestly, is like nothing else I have ever experienced.  I know that doesn’t help! ha!  So I will try my hardest to tell you what Zumba is like.

*side note: your first few Zumba classes ARE NOT the “true Zumba experience.”  You will be a bit confused, self-conscious, and you will feel silly.  However, if you stick it out for a few classes, you will catch the spark and most likely experience what I am about to explain.*

Let’s start with what is Zumba? 
Zumba is a dance fitness class.  It has international music, ranging from Latin to Belly Dance, to Reggeaton, Merengue, Samba and more! Zumba isn’t your regular fitness class.  Because of it’s dance base, Zumba feels more fun and less like a workout.  Zumba’s tagline is “Exercise in Disguise!” and it really is!

Ok, so what is Zumba like?

Zumba is like….a party.
For reals.  Zumba classes are full of international music (think the music you would hear at exotic dance clubs in South America, the Carribbean, and all over the world!).  The rhythms are different than anything you hear on a regular basis.  The instructor doesn’t yell at you.  There is no “4 more, 3 more…”  No “Harder, Faster!”   The instructor is just there to show you the moves and motivate you.  The class will most likely be whooping and hollering (in a good way).  The class is just plain fun.

Zumba is like… a full body workout.
Because it is!  You will work your arms, back, abs, legs…everything with Zumba!  I have worn a BodyBugg calorie counter to Zumba before and I burn an average of 500-600 calories in an hour long class!  It really works!

Zumba is like… taking a trip around the world!
Because of all the international music, you don’t feel bored like you might in some other aerobics classes.  Zumba is an escape.

So that is what Zumba is like.  But me telling you about it doesn’t really do much.  You honestly have to experience it.  So go to zumba.com and click “Find a Class.”  You can enter your city and see what classes are in your area.  Every instructor is different, so if you don’t love the first class you try, try again.  I tell people to find a class they like, then give it 5 tries.  After 5 visits, you will know if the class is a good fit for you.  But I promise you will love Zumba once you see what Zumba is like!  If you are in the Arkansas River Valley area, hit up my classes!

So, I am becoming quite the Zumba afficianado.  My blog posts that mention Zumba get more traffic, and I always get comments about Zumba.  So, since I know quite a bit about it (I am a Zumba instructor and have taken Zumba for 7+ years) I thought I would do a little weekly series on some Zumba topics.
