Zumba Weight Loss: My Story Zumba 101

I always hated working out.  Sure, in high school, I had a cute personal trainer (mom paid for it so I could learn how to work out) so it wasn’t all bad.  But I didn’t love it.  I dreaded it.
In college, I found Zumba.  Now, I didn’t have time to go super-regularly, but I liked it enough to motivate me to go.
In grad school, I MADE time to work out because I needed serious stress relief.  Once again, I turned to Zumba.  When I started going regularly, my body changed.  Now, Zumba isn’t going to be the “cure all” for weight loss.
But it is a SUPER effective workout.  Here is my Zumba weight loss story.
Summer 2010.  I was fat and unhappy.  I weighed 209 pounds, the heaviest of my life.
I started going to Zumba twice a week (and eating better) and it was hard physically at first, but I kept going.  Eventually, I could do two classes back to back (when I had time).  I lost 30 pounds in about 8 months.
Then I stopped watching what I was eating.  This is common after some weight loss, you loosen the reigns, so to speak.  I kept going to Zumba, and even started teaching it.  But I wasn’t watching what I ate.  I (thankfully) didn’t gain much weight.  I maintained for about a year and a half.  My husband did note however, that during this time I became more toned.  He said my arms and legs looked more toned, even though I wasn’t losing  weight.
Then I got back into watching what I was eating and continued to Zumba.  In about 5 months, I had lost 10 pounds.  A slow loss, but anything that is a loss is GREAT!  I am continuing to lose and tone.  This was me as of Spring 2012.  Thinner, happier, more toned.
So here you have my Zumba weight loss:  Summer 2010 (before), Fall 2011 (maintaining), and Spring 2012 (losing).
I know I use this picture a lot, but I won’t have another “after” until I reach my goal weight in 20 or so pounds.
Zumba is GREAT for weight loss, when paired with a healthy diet.
*Pair any exercise with eating better and you should have weight loss.  I started counting calories (eating between 1500-1600 calories on most days) of HEALTHY food and working out 3 times a week.  I have lost a total of 40 pounds over the last couple of years.  Since buckling down again in December, I have lost 10-15 pounds.  A slow loss, but a healthy loss.*
